The Alliance of 4 Universities (A-4U) is a strategic partnership between four leading Spanish public universities: Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB), Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), and Universiat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona (UPF).
The Alliance exists to:
- Enhance international mobility of students, researchers and academics.
- Establish research collaboration partnerships worldwide.
- Promote English-taught degrees offered by A-4U universities.
- Raise the international profile of A-4U members.
For many years the four universities of the Alliance have maintained good relationships and engaged in mutual collaboration, sharing a commitment to high-quality scientific research and teaching excellence.
In 2008 they officially formed an Alliance, the first of its kind in Spain, in order to optimise the combined resources of the four universities to achieve the above goals. The Alliance received support from the Spanish government through its agreements with the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX) and the Spanish Higher Research Council (CSIC).
The Alliance is proud of the fact that all its four member-universities hold the title of “Campus of International Excellence”. This title is a quality mark awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Education to universities, which represent an aggregation of institutions with a common strategic project and which create an academic, scientific, entrepreneurial and innovative environment aimed at obtaining greater international presence.
